Ideas from Far East Asia

After spending some time in Vietnam, and trips around the region, I fell in love with some of the ideas for interiors here... so sharing some images that I love and hope to bring to life in a home soon

Rattan and cane... so cooling.. simple.. won't work in a place that is dusty though...

I think I am in love with this style of ceiling...

In combination with wooden pillars....

Thatched roof always looks lovely...in Vietnam they use certain leaves that are natural flame retardants

love the colour of the wood here... and splashes of colour in other elements...

What a lovely lantern... casually set in corners and alcoves..

What a lovely way to display woven baskets...

Lighting is my passion.... its what turns any room into a magical space

Or these lanterns....

Many homes in Vietnam have this piece of furniture... very handy and cleverly designed

and last but not least...what a beautiful play with light....

Child Clutter

For those of us with kids... the bane of one's existence is child clutter.. how does one organize it in a practical way that is still the kids room, and yet neat, tidy and pleasing to the eye... here are a few ideas

Colours are great.. cheerful and clean.. and love the utilization of space

love an organized wardrobe

baskets and containers are lifesavers as far as clutter is concerned

No need to suppress the artist in your child .. with this idea, putting away the "tools" of the trade is easy

these baskets make clearing up a cinch!

And if you are obsessive about organizing... perhaps colour coding your baskets?

babies and toddlers are tough with so many little things..but here is a beautiful idea

Hope these images inspired you. I am taking on projects to help people with idea to decorate. So if you need help please write to me at ayeshahalam@yahoo.com. Right now am dealing with clients in Vietnam.. but am willing to travel

Whimsical Spaces

I think every home should have at least one whimsical space... one's escape from reality... here are some examples that I loved...hope you do too...they don't need to cost a lot...

and you can turn an existing room into a room of magical whimsy with a lot of candlelight.. I like to use candles and fairy lights ....

and if you want to bring the same idea outdoors... it works there too

here is a perfect spot to hide away with your morning tea or coffee and a good book

or a spot for a tea party ....have always loved outdoor living rooms...

If you are a morning person...here is a lovely whimsical space to sleep

Beautiful Doors

On my first trip to Paris many years ago..I was astounded by the abandon with which colour was splashed everywhere in the houses... and for the first time saw how front doors could be wildly colored.. Blue is one of my favourite color choices for the front door

And so is red. I have actually done this at one of the early apartments I lived in. Always makes for a cheerful entrance... trick is choosing the right shade of red taking into consideration what kind of light the area gets.. The Chinese believe it brings good luck

This is the kind of thing one would see at a mosque.. very rarely in anyone's home..unless its an old traditional home

I just love how different colour elements have been worked together to create a picture perfect entrance

and ethnic doors have always held a special place in my heart.. if you are lucky enough to have an original antique....hold on to it... or let me know if you want to sell it... if you aren't... there are carpenters out there who could replicate one for you...

or try combining ethnic with color

But if that is not your style... and clean lines are...

contemporary..

love how this is contemporary yet... unusual

Unusual Flower Arrangements

Flowers have a magical quality of perking up any room... and put simply into a vase will do the trick..but every now and then ..its fun to play with the traditional flower arrangement

Tie the stalks with a co-ordinating coloured ribbon and voila.. simple DIY

or go natural and use a leaf to wrap the stalks... elegant and beautiful

Baby shower perhaps?

Brilliant idea for a sit down dinner without flowers distracting one but all the magic

Clever way to make flowers go further again.. AND add the magic of candles

Love the citrus addition.. fresh and colorful

Taking inspiration from the lemons idea... one can add really anything... colour is key

Exotic Secret Gardens

I love outdoor spaces.. and more so.. making them into a private oasis .. a place to escape to... here are a few of my favourite ideas that I have collected over time...

I love the use of blinds to create a more intimate space.. for a quiet dinner... or to read a book ...

love the use of the mirror here to reflect the greenery and of course make the space look bigger..

I have always loved hanging lanterns and candles.. and they really spiff up any space..

anyone who knows me...knows I love the romance of canopies....

View of our tiny patio in Lahore... not a good pic...but you get the idea..

Dining Table Settings

Since this is the season everyone loves to entertain...actually we love to entertain all year round...thought it may be good to have dining table setting ideas to share with you

lovely spring colours mirrored in the foliage on the table

Though the above image is beautiful I would use it as inspiration but be careful of flower decorations that are too high on the table as we all know how annoying that is for conversations...

A great way to spruce up a table is by using shiny sparklies in goblets around the table...

If you ever wondered where to place everything for a formal dinner...

this is one example.. and the setting that I am most familiar with...some cultures do it slightly differently..just depends where you come from...
